Better Jobs Better Care is a 4-year $15.5 million research and demonstration program, managed by AAHSA's Institute for the Future of Aging Services Technology (IFAS) and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies that seeks to achieve changes in long-term care policy and practice to help reduce high vacancy and turnover rates among direct care staff across the spectrum of aging services and contribute to improved workforce quality. HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES The Healthcare Education Industry Partnership (HEIP) provides innovative leadership around strategic planning and initiatives that guide the development of a high quality healthcare workforce. Working collaboratively with institutions of higher learning and the broader healthcare provider community, Aging Services of Minnesota actively serves on the HEIP Council. The Minnesota Nursing Facility Employee Scholarship Program was enacted in 2001 to support long-term care facilities' efforts to recruit and retain qualified employees and to expand and improve Minnesota's long-term care workforce. Further, it seeks to improve the education and skills of long-term care employees, and provide them with a means of career advancement. More... Nursing Loan Forgiveness is available to Aging Services of Minnesota's nursing home employees pursuing RN or LPN training. Students can apply for the loan forgiveness program, administered by the Minnesota Department of Health's Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (ORHPC). More... Health and Long-Term Care Career Promotion Grants are available to help aging services providers, local school districts and higher education institutions develop healthcare career programs. The Health and Long-Term Care Career Promotion Grants, administered by Minnesota Departments of Education and Health provides grants of up to $20,000 are to consortiums around the state developing health and long-term care careers programs. A total of $147,000 is available statewide through a competitive grant process and applications are anticipated to be available in September, 2005. Members can review a recent listing of grant consortiums from around the state which were successful in receiving grant funding. The K-12 CONNECTION The Summer Healthcare Internship Program brings students and health care employers together, giving students experience in a health care environment and employers the opportunity to become more involved in their community. Participating nursing facilities, home health agencies, assisted living residences, hospitals, medical clinics, and physicians employ students between Memorial Day and Labor Day for six to 12 weeks for at least minimum wage. Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult and collegiate students interested in health occupations.
