From the Winner's Circle Speed Sale Company

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Winner's Circle Speed Sale Company will conduct its third annual yearling sale on Thursday (Oct. 10) at the Michigan State University Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, in East Lansing, Mich., beginning at 11 a.m.

The sale features 65 yearlings in total from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The bulk of the sale consists of yearlings eligible to the 2025 Michigan Colt Stakes program, and features yearlings from the first Michigan crops of Captain Victorious, Global Republic, Flanagan Memory and Musical Rhythm, four yearlings from the final crop of Michigan Hall of Fame stallion Manhardt, and 20 first-foal candidates.

The catalog contains a proposed 2025 program for Michigan-sired and -bred 2- and 3-year-olds, which includes an estimated $100,000 Sire Stakes final for each division, three $30,000 stakes events, and eight weeks of fair stakes contested on three circuits with base purses of $15,000, $10,000 and $8,000.  The program proposed by the Michigan Harness Horsemen's Association requires legislative action and Department of Agriculture approval, but MHHA president Brett Boyd is optimistic of its eventual passage and implementation.

"We have had positive meetings with both state budget directors on our supplemental request and have tentatively presented our proposed 2025 Colt Stakes program to MDARD officials," Boyd said. "Once our supplemental legislative effort is successful, we look forward to finalizing the program and schedule with officials from the Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Association of Fairs. MHHA is also assisting an effort with the Carlo family to realize a licensed track in Hastings, Mich., and potentially host 24-30 additional live race cards for 2025."

An online catalog and yearling videos are posted at winnerscirclespeedsale.com. The sale will be livestreamed on the sale website, and phone bidding will be accepted the day of the sale. Interested phone bidders should contact Don Marotta at (248) 249-3716 for call-in and credit procedures prior to the sale.

LUDINGTON, Mich. — After track conditions and weather forced multiple postponements of the Great Lakes Stakes, the 2024 Michigan fair harness racing circuit came to a close Thursday (Sept. 26) when the Great Lakes Stakes highlighted a 22-race marathon card at the Western Michigan Fair, in Ludington, Mich.

Art McIlmurray took top honors in the Great Lakes Stakes portion of the card, driving four stakes winners — two of them from his own barn.

Mr Pnut, trained and driven by McIlmurray, rallied to a 2:06.1 win in the $20,000 Great Lakes for 3-year-old male pacers. The Manhardt gelding enjoyed a pocket trip behind Kourageous Key, wedged off the pegs turning for home, and drew away in the final sixteenth to win by 2-1/2 lengths over the ground-saving Seeyalaterbye. He now has won two of his last three starts for owner Staci Malady, including the Sept. 3 Michigan-Sired Championship.

McIlmurray also trained and drove Smashin'classy to a 2:15.3 win in a $10,100 division of the 3-year-old filly trot for owner Ryan Morefield. His other driving wins came with Ruth Langmore (2:11), in a $10,200 rookie filly trot for trainer Kevin St. Charles, and Solidasabrickhouse (2:08.1), who edged Michigan champion Forever A Flirt in a $10,150 sophomore filly pace for trainer Krista Harmon.

After delivering devastating drubbings to 3-year-old male trotters all season long, Guns A Brazen and trainer-driver Raymond Kinney went out with a bang at Ludington, vacating the pocket with five-eighths to go, overtaking Inkadabra Abe at race's midpoint, and winning a $10,150 Great Lakes split by more than 15 lengths in 2:07.2, the fastest trotting mile of the day. The Brazen gelding won nine of 11 starts this summer for Sandra Kinney and Chad and Jared Kreeger.

The fastest pacing mile of the day went to Bunkerhill Lil, who sat the golden chair behind Mother Mary before lifting in the stretch to prevail by a long neck in 2:05.2. Charles Taylor drove the Vlos filly for trainer Jeff Novak and owner-breeder Gene Miller.

CENTREVILLE, Mich. — Six track records fell during the annual two-day harness racing meeting at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair, held Monday (Sept. 16) and Tuesday (Sept. 17).

Guns A Brazen wrote a new all-age trotting track record in the $11,150 3-year-old male trot on Monday's Michigan-Sired Colt Stakes program, vaulting from his second-row starting spot in line to trainer-driver Raymond Kinney and defeating Striking Chips in 1:59.3. The sophomore Brazen-Premier Glitter gelding has now won eight of 10 starts this year for the partnership of Sandra Kinney and Chad and Jared Kreeger, and his new standard erased the 30-year-old divisional and all-age standard of 2:01 established by Priority Big Boss.

Capella Star opened the card with a 2:03 win over Libbys Lucky Lady in the $10,000 2-year-old filly trot, shaving nearly two seconds off Rhianna Davine's 2:04.4 record, set in 2005. Trainer-driver Lavern Miller owns the Big Rigs-Dreamy Secret filly, who has now won five of 10 career starts.

Fresh off a hard-earned win in her $99,600 Michigan-sired Championship event, Forever A Flirt rolled back into the winner's circle — and the Centreville record books — with a 2:00 win over Junebug in the $11,000 3-year-old filly pace, one-fifth of a second faster than Doowrah Krysten's 31-year-old track record. Brad Kramer, who led all drivers with three wins on the eight-race card, steered the Bondi Hanover-Always A Romance filly to her eighth seasonal win for trainer Kelly Goodwin and co-owner Crystal Terrell.

Kramer and Goodwin teamed up to win the next race, the $11,000 3-year-old male pace, with Kourageous Key in 1:58.4, tying the divisional record set in 1995 by Jerry's Cadet. Goodwin co-owns the Manhardt-Kwani Key gelding, now victorious in eight of 10 seasonal tries, with Sarah Goodwin.

The sophomore male pacing and all-age records fell outright in Tuesday's (Sept. 17) Michigan-Bred Colt Stakes when Legendary Doowrah and trainer-driver Greg Bateson defeated Born Wild in the $8,000 3-year-old male pace in 1:58. Edwin Harwood owns the Bit Of A Legend N-Artistic Hanover gelding, who has now won 10 of 19 starts as a sophomore.

Broadway Liberty's (Tim Driver) 1:59.3 mile in a $1,000 Free-For-All Trot set a new standard for older trotters and tied Guns A Brazen's day-old all-age record, and RB (Ty Goodell) became the fastest older pacer in Centreville history with a 2:00.2 win.

Jojo In The Sky made the final of his 444 career starts in a $1,000 Free-For-All Pace, capping his career with a third-place finish. In all, the 15-year-old son of Whosurboy won 36 times, finished third or better 131 times, and earned $189,272 for owner Nancy Karnatz and trainer Jennifer Carpenter, who have raced Jojo In The Sky for his entire career.

Chanceitlikeitis turned in the fastest pacing mile of the meet with a 2:06.2 score in a $2,000 conditioned pace, followed by Word To The Wise (2:07.1) giving Cloer the second half of a training and driving double on the day while sealing top honors at the meet for the 54-year-old Michigan native.

HASTINGS, Mich. — Trainer Tim Roach accounted for three of the eight winners on Tuesday's (Sept. 3) $767,000 Michigan-Sired Championship program, held at the Barry Expo Center.

Roach kicked off his hat trick in the $83,530 freshman filly trot with Libbys Lucky Lady, whom he drove to a 3-3/4-length, 2:03 victory over Capella Star and Keepurhandstourslf, and also owns together with Kyle Larner and Ron Van Wagoner. The daughter of Musclesprinctonian-Stickum Vicky has won six of her 10 career races and earned $67,188.

Roach also teamed Elian's Lightning to victory in the $99,600 3-year-old filly trot, riding the pocket to a half-length, 2:03.2 score over Velma Kelly. Divisional standout Ice Crystal, who broke stride just before the half-mile pole, stormed home to narrowly miss the runner-up spot. The Southwind Elian-Show Me The Light filly, who won eight of 11 starts at 2, won for only the second time this season but lifted her bankroll to $145,859 for Roach and Willa Rousseau.

Gap Hunter was the centerpiece of Roach's training triple, rallying to a maiden-breaking 1:58.2 win over Hardt Of A King and Ena Gottabebondi in the $102,013 championship for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Chris Page catch-drove the Bondi Hanover-Fox Valley Bailey gelding to a three-quarter-length score for Green Rock Stable.

Driver Art McIlmurray recorded a double, winning the $98,000 3-year-old male pace with Mr Pnut and the $84,170 2-year-old male trot with Deadly Sting.

Mr Pnut, whom McIlmurray trains for owner-breeder Staci Malady, won for the first time this year and the fifth time in his career after launching a first-over bid up the backstretch into pacesetter Kourageous Key, dueling him into defeat through the far turn, and prevailing by a widening 1-3/4 lengths in 1:56.1, the fastest mile of the day. Isle Of Man finished third.

Deadly Sting, a Musclesprinctonian-Chipps Lake gelding owned by trainer Krista Harmon and breeder Libby Myers, sat off the pace, emerged in contention at the top of the stretch when leader Chip Of The South broke stride, and rallied down the center of the track to nab Ripn Hero by a half length in 2:03 for his second win in 10 career starts. New Plan Stan, who entered the race undefeated, tired after being parked from the outset and finished third.

Kaa Dee Archie was the fastest trotter on the program, driven by David Lake to a four-length, 2:00 win over T L Waldo and Striking Chips in the $99,600 3-year-old male pace. Divisional standout Guns A Brazen failed to sustain a three-wide push at the half-mile pole and finished sixth. Kent Hess trains the victorious son of Southwind Russet-Can't Fire Me, who has won seven of his 10 races this year and has won 11 times and banked $100,241 lifetime while competing as a homebred for Marjorie Deshetsky.

Forever A Flirt turned in a gutsy performance to win the $99,600 3-year-old filly pace. In line to Brad Kramer, the Bondi Hanover-Always A Romance filly was headed by Flippin Lucky heading into the far turn before battling back to prevail by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.4 over pocket rival Pair Of Harts, who lunged up the inside to collar Flippin Lucky for second. Forever A Flirt has won seven of nine starts this year and 12 of 18 in her career, banking $134,725 for trainer Kelly Goodwin and co-owner Crystal Terrell.

BBs Tonicfor Jetta and trainer-driver Rex Putnam pounced from the pocket to upend Myheartfromtestart in the $101,213 2-year-old filly pace by 1-3/4 lengths in 2:00.2. Can't Xplain It rallied for third. The Stonebridge Tonic-Hoosier Jetta filly has now won two of seven starts for Rebecca Putnam.

The Michigan fair harness racing circuit travels to Allegan, Mich., for two programs next week:  Monday (Sept. 9) and Wednesday (Sept. 11). First post both days is 12 noon.

Track records decimated at Oceana (Mich.) County Fair

from the Michigan Harness Horsemen's Association

HART, Mich. — Bo Silas became the fastest trotter in the history of the Oceana County Fair, parrying a head-stretch challenge from Rankin to win Tuesday's (Aug. 20) $7,950 Michigan Colt Stakes for Michigan-bred 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings in 1:59.

In line to Brad Kramer, Bo Silas set early fractions of :30.1, 1:01.2 and 1:30.3 with Rankin sitting in the pocket. Turning for home, Rankin encroached to within a length of Bo Silas, but the gelded son of Jailhouse Jesse-Betteka sprinted home in :28.2 to score by 3-1/4 widening lengths.

The 1:59 mark takes 2-2/5 seconds off Erie's Blues' 2:01.2 all-age record, set in 1996, and three seconds off the divisional mark of 2:02, shared by New Swan In Town and Bluemoon Glide. Trainer Kelly Goodwin shares ownership of the Jailhouse Jesse-Betteka gelding with Deborah Spike-Pierce and Scott Price.

Born Wild used a :27.4 sprint home to evade Captain Candy Man by 1-1/4 lengths in the $7,950 3-year-old male pace, with his 1:58 winning time taking two-fifths of a second off the 1:58.2 divisional standard set in 2003 by Johnny G That's Me and a tick of Black Chana's 20-year-old all-age track record of 1:58.1. David Lake drove the Well Said-Artistic Heart gelding for trainer Kent Hess and owner Ted Boschma.

    Also, on Tuesday's card:

    • King Putt rode the pocket to a four-length, 1:59.4 win over Nightpro Star in the $8,050 2-year-old male pace, one-fifth of a second faster than the 2:00 divisional record set by Goodness Graycious last year. Joe Casagranda bred, owns, trains and drove the JK Endofanera-PV Miracle Mary colt.
    • Tequila Time defeated Plays Pro by 7-1/4 lengths in the $8,000 2-year-old filly pace, and her 2:01 time matched the divisional record set by Mother Mary last year. Driver Aaron Colley owns and trains the daughter of Real Desire-DCN Tulip Time.

Monday's (Aug. 19) Colt Stakes card for Michigan-sired horses also saw a pair of long-standing track records fall:

    • Kaa Dee Carol and Lake sped to a 2:05.1 win in the $9,950 2-year-old filly trot, knocking 1-2/5 seconds of Mariesa's Gem Star's 2002 standard. Kent Hess trains the Marjorie Deshetsky homebred Southwind Russet-Can't Fire Me filly.
    • Ice Crystal and owner-breeder-trainer-driver Scott Altizer romped in the $11,150 sophomore filly trot, defeating Paragonalisnchains by 10-3/4 lengths in 2:04.4 and taking one-fifth of a second off Quillionaire's 20-year-old divisional track record.

The Michigan fair harness racing circuit returns to the Barry Expo Center, in Hastings, Mich., on the next two Tuesdays (Aug. 27 and Sept. 3).

Guns A Brazen asserts, Kramer triples in Midland (Mich.)

from the Michigan Harness Horsemen's Association

MIDLAND, Mich. — Guns A Brazen stamped himself as the season's leading Michigan-sired 3-year-old male trotter when he handed Kaa Dee Archie his first defeat on the Michigan fair harness racing circuit in Saturday's (Aug. 10) $11,150 Michigan Colt Stakes event at the Midland (Mich.) County Fair.

Through the first six weeks of the season, Guns A Brazen and Kaa Dee Archie had managed to avoid each other by drawing into separate divisions, and they both maintained undefeated seasonal records on the circuit, with Guns A Brazen winning all six of his starts and Kaa Dee Archie taking all five.

In their meeting at Midland, Guns A Brazen and trainer-driver Raymond Kinney floated into fourth from his back-row starting spot as Inkadabra Abe and T L Waldo dueled through first-half fractions of :31.1 and 1:00.3. Heading to the midway point, Kinney angled Guns A Brazen three-wide, and he vaulted around dueling leaders with ease and power to build up an eight-length lead at three-quarters in 1:30.1. From there, the Brazen-Premier Glitter gelding was never in doubt, speeding away from Kaa Dee Archie — who similarly swept three-wide into second on the backstretch — to win by 11-3/4 lengths in 2:01.3. Smashingoodmatch closed for third.

Sandra Kinney and Chad and Jared Kreeger own Guns A Brazen, who is now seven-for-seven this season.

Driver Brad Kramer took three Colt Stakes events on Saturday's nine-race card after also tripling on Friday (Aug. 9). He won the $9,950 2-year-old filly pace with Brett Boyd trainee Myheaertfromtestart in 2:05.2; and he then teamed up with trainer Kelly Goodwin to sweep the sophomore paces, steering Forever A Flirt to a 2:01.3 win in the $11,100 filly division and Kourageous Key to a 2:00 score in the $11,000 split for colts and geldings.

Kramer's Friday hat trick included a pair of Colt Stakes Green Division wins for trainer Paul Cloer Jr.: Taylor Dawn won the $5,000 freshman filly pace in 2:09, and Topinabee narrowly edged Man Of Time in 2:08.4 in the $5,000 male pace.

The Michigan fair harness racing circuit moves to Charlotte, Mich., on Monday (Aug. 12); the 17-race card is slated to begin at 12 noon.

BAD AXE, Mich. — Guns A Brazen continued to build a case for himself as Michigan's top 3-year-old male trotter on Sunday (July 28) at the Huron Community Fair, where he trotted the fastest mile in the 156-year history of the fair by way of his 2:01.1 victory in a $5,600 Michigan Colt Stakes Blue Division event.

Trainer-driver Raymond Kinney sent Guns A Brazen straight to the front from post five, and the pair cleared Inkadabra Abe midway on the first turn before opening a six-length advantage through a :29.1 first quarter. Guns A Brazen extended his advantage to 10 lengths through a :59.3 half before Striking Chips emerged to take second up the backstretch and cut into Guns A Brazen's margin through the far turn. Despite Striking Chips' late rally, the victorious Brazen-Premier Glitter gelding held clear by five lengths to record his sixth victory in as many starts this season and to take a fifth of a second off Rompaway Willie and Tim Martinson's 2:01.2 standard, set in 2005.

Sandra Kinney, Chad Kreeger and Jared Kreeger share ownership of Guns A Brazen.

The $5,600 first division of the 3-year-old filly pace saw Fancywontletyadown duel down Forever A Flirt — who was previously undefeated on the season — in 1:59.4, the fastest mile of the meet. Kody Massey drove the Megatron-Too Shy filly to her fourth victory of the circuit for trainer Al Tomlinson, who shares ownership with Edward Engle Jr. and David Jarvis.

Two drivers notched stakes doubles on Sunday: Brad Kramer drove a pair of five-time seasonal winners in 2-year-old pacing colt Not Fake New's (2:04) and 3-year-old pacing gelding Kourageous Key (2:02), while Chuck Taylor won win 2-year-old trotting gelding Amtrac (2:10) and 3-year-old pacing filly Pair Of Hardts (2:03.3).

Monday's (July 29) Michigan Colt Stakes Green highlights included New Plan Stan and trainer-driver Greg Bateson improving to a perfect three-for-three with a 2:07.2 win in the $5,000 2-year-old male trot, and Kaa Dee Polly scoring her fourth win in six seasonal starts by way of a 2:07 score in the $5,000 2-year-old filly pace.

Bateson also made headlines at the Clare County Fair, in Harrison, Mich., earlier in the week, piloting Legendary Doowrah to a 1:59.1 score in an $8,000 event for Michigan-bred pacers on Friday (July 26). The 3-year-old Bit Of A Legend N-Artistic Hanover gelding improved to three-for-three in Michigan this season while notching his seventh win in 15 starts this season.

The Michigan fair harness racing circuit moves to Ludington, Mich., for a two-day stand at the Western Michigan Fair. The Great Lake Stakes are slated for Monday (Aug. 5) while Tuesday's program features Michigan Colt Stakes for Michigan-sired and Michigan-bred 2- and 3-year-olds.
